Fire Zone Pressure, explained
Send five, cover with a zone behind it, and drop a lineman into the exact window the quarterback's blitz-training tells him is open. Pressure that sacks the answer, not just the man.
Where it came from
The zone blitz's mature form: born from the realization that the cost of blitzing wasn't the fifth rusher — it was the man coverage behind him. Keep three deep and three underneath, and the pressure gets speed without nakedness.
Where it lives now
Everywhere above youth ball. It is the standard pressure grammar of the modern game at high school, college, and pro levels.
The base play
Overload one side with three rushers, drop a defender (often a lineman) opposite, spin to three-deep three-under behind it. The QB's protection count is wrong on one side and his hot window is occupied on the other.
The constraint play
The 'creeper' or simulated pressure: identical pre-snap picture, but only four rush and seven cover. Offenses that solve the fire zone with fast hot throws get those throws jumped by the extra dropper.
How defenses answer it
(From the offense's side.) Six-man protection sliding toward the overload, quick game away from the rotation, and screens INTO the vacated rush lanes. Tempo also starves it — complex pressures need huddle time.
The counter to the counter
Pressure menus mutate weekly precisely because each one has a screen answer: the defense's counter is variety, showing the same picture and playing four different things from it.
Strengths, costs, and personnel
Three-deep zone behind pressure means soft flats and honest seams if the rush doesn't arrive on time. A QB with a clean half-second beats the coverage's math. It's a bet on timing, every time.
Across the four levels
Youth: Blitzing is often banned; this system waits for older kids.
High School: Two or three fire zones is a full HS pressure menu — and plenty.
College: Constrained by tempo but central; the boundary fire zone loves wide hashes.
Pro: The full art form: pressures designed against specific protection counts identified on film.
